Ser cristiano no es una cuestión de hacer: ir a la iglesia, cantar canciones al Señor, orar, dar, leer las Escrituras o compartir la Palabra de Dios, aunque todas esas son cosas buenas que ayudan a construir nuestra fe. Del mismo modo, ser creyente no consiste en lo que no hacemos: fumar, beber, decir palabrotas, acostarse con cualquiera, aunque es prudente evitar esas actividades.
Más bien, ser cristiano es tener una relación con Jesús. El Salvador es responsible de realizar su obra: transformarte y hacer que te parezcas más a Él. Él es el autor y el consumador, el que te discipula para que puedas crecer en santidad y caminar de acuerdo con su plan. Tú no puedes cambiar tu naturaleza pecaminosa, pero el Señor usa tus situaciones para llevarte a un punto en el que reconozcas: «No puedo hacer esto por mí mismo». Entonces, Él te capacita para vencer con su poder.
Solo el Espíritu Santo de Dios puede cambiar tu corazón. Así que no te castigues, desesperes ni retrocedas. En vez de eso, deja ir tu ilusión de autosuficiencia y acepta que aquel que te salvó es el que te enseña a caminar con Él. Luego obedécelo.

Being a Christian isn’t a matter of doing—going to church, singing hymns, praying, giving, reading Scripture, or sharing God’s Word, although those are all good things that help build our faith. Likewise, being a believer is not about what we don’t do—smoking, drinking, swearing, sleeping around—though it is wise to avoid those activities.
Rather, being a Christian is about being in a relationship with Jesus. The work to be done is His—the Savior is responsible for transforming you and making you more like Himself. He is your Author and Completer, the One who disciples you so that you can grow in godliness and walk according to His plan. You cannot change your sinful nature, but the Lord uses the situations in your life to move you to a point where you acknowledge, “I can’t do this by myself.” Then He enables you to overcome them in His power.
Only God’s Holy Spirit can change your human heart. So do not beat yourself up, despair, or retreat. Instead, let go of your illusion of self-sufficiency and accept that the One who saved you is the One who teaches you to walk with Him. Then obey Him.
