—Maestro, ¿cuál es el mandamiento más importante de la ley?—“Ama al Señor tu Dios con todo tu corazón, con todo tu ser y con toda tu mente”,—le respondió Jesús—. Este es el primero y el más importante de los mandamientos. El segundo se parece a este: “Ama a tu prójimo como a ti mismo”. (Mateo 22:36-39)
Mientras que cada mandato de Dios es grande e importante, Jesús dijo que el más grande y más importante de todos es que caminemos en el amor. Debemos amar a Dios y la gente como nos amamos a nosotros mismos. También dijo que es por este amor que el mundo sabrá que somos sus discípulos (ver Juan 13:35).
El amor no es solo una teoría o una enseñanza que le inspire; es real y práctico. El amor puede ser visto y sentido, y tiene el poder de hacer milagros para cambiar vidas.
Caminar en amor requerirá que tomemos decisiones diarias para vivir más allá de nuestras emociones. Puede que no siempre “tengamos deseos” de tomarnos el tiempo para ser amables con otra persona, pero cada vez que lo hacemos estamos caminando en amor. El amor no es un sentimiento que tenemos, sino una elección que hacemos sobre cómo tratar a la gente.

Showing Real Love
“Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” And Jesus replied to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. The second is like it, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself [that is, unselfishly seek the best or higher good for others].’”
(Matthew 22:36–39)
While every command from God is great and important, Jesus said that the greatest or most important of all is that we walk in love. We are to love God and love people as we love ourselves. He also said that it is by this love that the world will know we are His disciples (see John 13:35).
Love is not just a theory or a teaching that inspires you; it is real and practical. Love can be seen and felt, and it has miracle-working power to change lives.
Walking in love will require us to make choices daily to live beyond our emotions. We may not always “feel” like taking the time to be kind to someone else, but each time we do, we are walking in love. Love is not a feeling we have but a choice we make about how we will treat people.
