No podemos sobrevivir sin esperanza. La esperanza es lo que nos mantiene en los momentos más oscuros. Sin esperanza todo está perdido. Pero ¿De dónde viene nuestra esperanza? Si creemos que Jesucristo es el hijo de Dios que vino a salvarnos de nuestro pecado, entonces nuestra esperanza está en Él. Nuestra esperanza está puesta en la eternidad y no nos la pueden quitar.
Sin embargo, con demasiada frecuencia ponemos nuestras esperanzas en cosas menores y nos sentimos inevitablemente decepcionados cuando no salen como lo planeamos. Si bien está bien tener esperanzas en esta vida (entrar a esa universidad, salir con ese chico, conseguir el trabajo), no es ahí donde, en última instancia, puede estar nuestra esperanza. Siempre estoy esperando que lo siguiente me brinde la satisfacción que estoy buscando y, desafortunadamente, nunca lo hace.
Entré en la mejor universidad y me deprimí durante el primer trimestre. Empecé un trabajo que pensé que me encantaría después de la universidad, sólo para descubrir que no era el adecuado para mí. Y finalmente, me casé con un hombre maravilloso y aprendí que el matrimonio puede ser difícil, incluso cuando estás casada con tu mejor amigo. Pero Dios nunca me ha decepcionado.
Cada vez que recuerdo volver a poner mi esperanza en Él, Él aparece y me da la satisfacción que sigo tratando de buscar fuera de Él. La plenitud suprema no llegará hasta después de esta vida, cuando estemos completamente unidos con Él, y eso es lo que debemos esperar. Entonces, si bien es bueno tener esperanza en las cosas ahora, mantengamos los ojos fijos en nuestra esperanza eterna.

Ayúdame a sostener mis esperanzas con manos sueltas y confiar en que Tú sabes qué es lo mejor para mi vida. Muéstrame cómo poner mi esperanza en ti en lugar de mis circunstancias, que siempre están cambiando. Gracias. Amén.
Hope
“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”
Romans 15:13
We can’t survive without hope. Hope is what keeps us going through the darkest of times. Without hope, all is lost. But where does our hope come from? If we believe that Jesus Christ is the son of God who came to save us from our sin, then our hope is in Him. Our hope is set in eter- nity and cannot be taken from us.
Too often, though, we place our hope in lesser things and are inevitably disap- pointed when they don’t go as we planned. While it’s okay to hope for things in this life (getting into that college, dating that guy, getting the job), that is not where our hope can ultimately be. I’m always waiting for the next thing to bring me the fulfill- ment I’m looking for, and unfortunately, it never does.
I got into my top college only to become depressed the first quarter. I started a job Ithought I would love after college, only to find it wasn’t the right fit for me. And finally, I married a wonderful man and learned that marriage can be tough, even when you are married to your best friend. But God has never let me down.
Whenever I remember to place my hope back in Him, He shows up and gives me the fulfillment I keep trying to seek outside of Him. The ultimate fulfillment won’t come until after this life when we are fully united with Him, and that’s what we have to look forward to. So, while it’s good to hope for things now, let’s keep our eyes fixed on our eternal hope.

Prayer: God, you know the things that I hope for. And I’ll admit, I’m clinging tightly to those things instead of to You. Help me to hold my hopes with loose hands and trust that You know what’s best for my life. Show me how to place my hope in You instead of my circumstances, which are always changing. Thank You.
