Dios posee una gloria inherente porque es Dios. Es así por naturaleza. No podemos agregarle nada a esa gloria, así como tampoco nos sería posible hacer que el sol brillara con más intensidad. El mandamiento que tenemos es que debemos reconocer su gloria, honrar su gloria, declarar su gloria, alabar su gloria, reflejar su gloria y vivir para su gloria. ¿Por qué? ¡Porque Dios se lo merece! Le debemos toda la honra que seamos capaces de darle. Su Palabra afirma: «Digno eres, Señor y Dios nuestro, de recibir la gloria, la honra y el poder, porque tú creaste todas las cosas».8
En todo el universo hay solo dos creaciones de Dios que fallaron en darle gloria: los ángeles caídos (los demonios) y nosotros (las personas). Todo pecado, por naturaleza, implica fallar en darle gloria a Dios. Pecar es amar cualquier cosa más que a él. Negarse a darle la gloria a Dios es una rebeldía vanidosa: el pecado que provocó la caída de Satanás, y la nuestra también. De distinta manera todos hemos vivido para nuestra propia gloria y no para la de Dios. Su Palabra declara que «todos han pecado y están privados de la gloria de Dios».
Ninguno de nosotros le hemos dado a Dios toda la gloria que merece de parte nuestra. Este es el peor pecado y el error más grave que podemos cometer. Por otro lado, vivir para la gloria de Dios es el mayor logro que podemos alcanzar en nuestra vida. Debería ser la meta suprema de nuestra vida, porque Dios dice que «somos su pueblo, creado para su gloria».
¿Cómo puedo darle gloria a Dios?
Jesús le dijo al Padre: «Yo te glorifiqué en la tierra, habiendo terminado la obra que me diste que hiciera».11 Jesús honró a Dios cumpliendo su propósito en esta tierra. Nosotros lo honramos del mismo modo. Cuando algo en la creación cumple con su propósito, eso le da gloria a Dios. Las aves le dan gloria a Dios cuando vuelan, trinan, hacen sus nidos y otras actividades propias de las aves según el designio divino. Hasta la humilde hormiguita le da gloria a Dios cuando cumple el propósito para el que fue creada. Dios creó a las hormigas para que fueran hormigas, y te creó a ti para que fueras tú. San Ireneo dijo: «¡La gloria de Dios es un ser humano lleno de vida!».
Hay muchas maneras de darle gloria a Dios, pero se pueden resumir en los cinco propósitos de Dios para nuestra vida. En el resto de este libro estudiaremos estas maneras en detalle, pero podemos adelantar este bosquejo:
Glorificamos a Dios cuando lo adoramos. La adoración es nuestra primera responsabilidad. Adoramos a Dios cuando disfrutamos de su compañía. C.S. Lewis asertó: «Al ordenarnos glorificarlo, Dios nos invita a disfrutar de él». Él quiere que nuestra adoración brote del amor, la gratitud y el gozo, no de la obligación.
John Piper señala: «Cuanto más satisfechos nos sentimos en él, más glorificamos a Dios».
La adoración es más que alabanza, canto y oración a Dios. Es un estilo de vida que implica gozar de Dios, amarlo y entregarle nuestra vida para que la use de acuerdo con sus propósitos. Cuando usamos nuestra vida para la gloria de Dios, todo lo que hacemos se convierte en un acto de adoración. La Biblia nos exhorta: «Entréguense a Dios, como personas que han muerto y han vuelto a vivir, y entréguenle su cuerpo como instrumento para hacer lo que justo ante él».
Glorificamos a Dios cuando amamos a los demás creyentes. Con el nuevo nacimiento nos convertimos en miembros de la familia de Dios. Seguir a Cristo no es solo cuestión de creer; también implica pertenecer a su familia y aprender a amarla. Juan escribió: «El amor que nos tenemos demuestra que ya no estamos muertos, sino que ahora vivimos». Pablo dijo: «Acéptense mutuamente, así como Cristo los aceptó a ustedes para gloria de Dios».
Reflexión:
Cuando algo en la creación cumple con su propósito, eso le da gloria a Dios.
DAY 7 /Second part – The Reason for Everything
The city [to come] does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light. REVELATION 21:23 (NIV)
God’s inherent glory is what he possesses because he is God. It is his nature. We cannot add anything to this glory, just as it would be impossible for us to make the sun shine brighter. But we are commanded to recognize his glory, honor his glory, declare his glory, praise his glory, reflect his glory, and live for his glory. 7 Why? Because God deserves it! We owe him every honor we can possibly give. Since God made all things, he deserves all the glory. The Bible says, “You are worthy, O Lord our God, to receive glory and honor and power. For you created everything.”
In the entire universe, only two of God’s creations fail to bring glory to him: fallen angels (demons) and us (people). All sin, at its root, is failing to give God glory. It is loving anything else more than God. Refusing to bring glory to God is prideful rebellion, and it is the sin that caused Satan’s fall — and ours, too. In different ways we have all lived for our own glory, not God’s. The Bible says, “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”
None of us have given God the full glory he deserves from our lives. This is the worst sin and the biggest mistake we can make. On the other hand, living for God’s glory is the greatest achievement we can accomplish with our lives. God says, “They are my own people, and I created them to bring me glory,” so it ought to be the supreme goal of our lives.
How Can I Bring Glory to God?
Jesus told the Father, “I brought glory to you here on earth by doing everything you told me to do.” Jesus honored God by fulfilling his purpose on earth. We honor God the same way. When anything in creation fulfills its purpose, it brings glory to God. Birds bring glory to God by flying, chirping, nesting, and doing other bird-like activities that God intended. Even the lowly ant brings glory to God when it fulfills the purpose it was created for. God made ants to be ants, and he made you to be you. St. Irenaeus said, “The glory of God is a human being fully alive!”
There are many ways to bring glory to God, but they can be summarized in God’s five purposes for your life. We will spend the rest of this book looking at them in detail, but here is an overview:
When anything in creation fulfills its purpose, it brings glory to God.
We bring God glory by worshiping him. Worship is our first responsibility to God. We worship God by enjoying him. C. S. Lewis said, “In commanding us to glorify him, God is inviting us to enjoy him.” God wants our worship to be motivated by love, thanksgiving, and delight, not duty.
John Piper notes, “God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in him.”
Worship is far more than praising, singing, and praying to God. Worship is a lifestyle of enjoying God, loving him, and giving ourselves to be used for his purposes. When you use your life for God’s glory, everything you do can become an act of worship. The Bible says, “Use your whole body as a tool to do what is right for the glory of God.”
We bring God glory by loving other believers. When you were born again, you became a part of God’s family. Following Christ is not just a matter of believing; it also includes belonging and learning to love the family of God. John wrote, “Our love for each other proves that we have gone from death to life.” Paul said, “Accept each other just as Christ has accepted you; then God will be glorified.”
