La Biblia está llena de metáforas que enseñan la naturaleza de lo breve, temporal y transitorio de la vida terrena. La vida se describe como un vapor, uno que corre rápido, un soplo de aliento y un rastro de humo. La Escritura declara: «Nosotros nacimos ayer… nuestros días en este mundo son como una sombra».
Para hacer buen uso de tu vida nunca debes olvidar dos verdades: Primero, la vida, comparada con la eternidad, es extremadamente breve. Segundo, la tierra es tan solo una residencia temporal. No vas a estar aquí por mucho tiempo, así que no te apegues demasiado. Pídele a Dios que te ayude a ver la vida en la tierra a través de sus ojos. David oró: «Dios mío, hazme saber cuál será mi fin, y cuánto tiempo me queda de vida; hazme saber cuán corta es mi vida». La Biblia compara constantemente la vida en la tierra con vivir en un país extranjero. Este no es tu hogar permanente o tu destino final. Estás aquí de paso, visitando la tierra.
La Biblia emplea términos como extranjero, peregrino, advenedizo, extraño, visitante y viajero para describir nuestra corta estadía en la tierra. El salmista dijo: «Estoy de paso en este mundo»3 y Pedro explicó que: «Si tú llamas Padre a Dios, vive tu tiempo en esta tierra como si estuvieras de paso».
Vivo en California, donde muchas personas de todas partes del mundo se han mudado para trabajar, aunque mantienen la ciudadanía de sus respectivos países. Se les pide que lleven consigo una tarjeta de residencia (conocida como «green card»), que les permite trabajar aquí aunque no sean ciudadanos. Los cristianos deberíamos llevar «tarjetas verdes» («green cards») espirituales para recordarnos que nuestra ciudadanía está en los cielos. Dios afirma que sus hijos deberían pensar sobre la vida de una manera muy distinta a la de los no creyentes. «Sólo piensan en lo terrenal. En cambio, nosotros somos ciudadanos del cielo, de donde anhelamos recibir al Señor Jesucristo».5 Los verdaderos creyentes saben que la vida es mucho más que los pocos años que vivimos sobre este planeta.
Tu identidad está en la eternidad y tu patria es el cielo.
DAY 6 – Life Is a Temporary Assignment

LIFE ON EARTH IS A TEMPORARY ASSIGNMENT.
The Bible is full of metaphors that teach about the brief, temporary, transient nature of life on earth. Life is described as a mist, a fast runner, a breath, and a wisp of smoke. The Bible says, “For we were born but yesterday. . . . Our days on earth are as transient as a shadow.”
To make the best use of your life, you must never forget two truths: First, compared with eternity, life is extremely brief. Second, earth is only a temporary residence. You won’t be here long, so don’t get too attached. Ask God to help you see life on earth as he sees it. David prayed, “Lord, help me to realize how brief my time on earth will be. Help me to know that I am here for but a moment more.”
Repeatedly the Bible compares life on earth to temporarily living in a foreign country. This is not your permanent home or final destination. You’re just passing through, just visiting earth. The Bible uses terms like alien, pilgrim, foreigner, stranger, visitor, and traveler to describe our brief stay on earth. David said, “I am but a foreigner here on earth,” and Peter explained, “If you call God your Father, live your time as temporary residents on earth.”
In California, where I live, many people have moved from other parts of the world to work here, but they keep their citizenship with their home country. They are required to carry a visitor registration card (called a “green card”), which allows them to work here even though they aren’t citizens. Christians should carry spiritual green cards to remind us that our citizenship is in heaven. God says his children are to think differently about life from the way unbelievers do. “All they think about is this life here on earth. But we are citizens of heaven, where the Lord Jesus Christ lives.” Real believers understand that there is far more to life than just the few years we live on this planet. Your Identity is in eternity, and your homeland is heaven.
