La única ocasión en la que la gente piensa en la eternidad es en los funerales, y suele ser de una manera superficial, teniendo ideas sentimentales basadas en la ignorancia. Quizás consideres que resulta morboso pensar en la muerte, pero en realidad es contraproducente vivir negándola y no considerar lo que es inevitable. Solo un necio puede andar por la vida sin prepararse para lo que todos sabemos que debe ocurrir. Debes pensar más en la eternidad, no menos.
De la misma manera que estuviste nueve meses en el vientre de tu madre sin ser esto un fin en sí mismo, sino una preparación para la vida, así es esta vida una preparación para la otra. Si tienes una relación con Dios por medio de Jesucristo, no debes temer a la muerte, que es la puerta a la eternidad. Será la última hora de tu vida en la tierra, pero no el fin de tu ser. En lugar de ser el fin de tu vida, será tu cumpleaños en la vida eterna. La Biblia afirma: «Amigos, este mundo no es su hogar, así que no se acomoden en él. No complazca a su ego a expensas de su alma».9
Cuando medimos nuestro tiempo en la tierra, comparado con la eternidad, es como un abrir y cerrar de ojos, pero las consecuencias del mismo duran para siempre. Las obras de esta existencia son el destino de la otra vida. Debemos pensar que «por eso mantenemos siempre la confianza, aunque sabemos que mientras vivamos en este cuerpo estaremos alejados del Señor».
Hace años un popular eslogan motivaba a la gente a vivir cada día: «Este es el primer día del resto de tu vida». En realidad, sería más sabio vivir cada día como si fuese el último. Matthew Henry asertó: «La responsabilidad de cada día debiera ser prepararnos para nuestro día final».

Day 4 / Part 3 • Made to Last Forever
This world is not our home; we are looking forward to our everlasting home in heaven.

Just as the nine months you spent in your mother’s womb were not an end in themselves but preparation for life, so this life is preparation for the next. If you have a relationship with God through Jesus, you don’t need to fear death. It is the door to eternity. It will be the last hour of your time on earth, but it won’t be the last of you. Rather than being the end of your life, it will be your birthday into eternal life. The Bible says, “This world is not our home; we are looking forward to our everlasting home in heaven.”
Measured against eternity, our time on earth is just a blink of an eye, but the consequences of it will last forever. The deeds of this life are the destiny of the next. We should be “realizing that every moment we spend in these earthly bodies is time spent away from our eternal home in heaven with Jesus.” Years ago a popular slogan encouraged people to live each day as “the first day of the rest of your life.” Actually, it would be wiser to live each day as if it were the last day of your life. Matthew Henry said, “It ought to be the business of every day to prepare for our final day.”
