ESTA VIDA NO LO ES TODO. La vida aquí en la tierra es solo el ensayo antes de la verdadera actuación. Estarás mucho más tiempo al otro lado de la muerte, en la eternidad, que aquí. La tierra es el escenario, la escuela primaria, el ensayo para tu vida en la eternidad. Los ejercicios, el entrenamiento antes del partido, el trote de calentamiento antes de que la carrera empiece. Esta vida es el preámbulo de la venidera. En la tierra, como máximo, vivirás cien años; pero en la eternidad vivirás para siempre. Tu vida en la tierra es como dijera Sir Thomas Browne: «Solo un pequeño paréntesis en la eternidad». Fuiste creado para vivir por siempre.
La Biblia afirma: «Dios… ha plantado eternidad en el corazón de los hombres». Tienes un instinto innato que anhela la inmortalidad. La razón de esto es que Dios te hizo a su imagen para vivir eternamente. Aunque sabemos que todos hemos de morir, la muerte siempre parece injusta e ilógica. ¡Pensamos que deberíamos vivir para siempre por la sencilla razón de que Dios ha implantado ese deseo en nuestros cerebros!
Tu corazón dejará de palpitar en algún momento. Eso determinará el fin de tu cuerpo y tus días en la tierra, pero no será el fin de tu ser. Tu cuerpo terrenal es una simple residencia temporal para tu espíritu. La Biblia llama al cuerpo terrenal una «tienda de campaña», y a tu futuro cuerpo una «casa». Las Escrituras dicen: «Si esta tienda de campaña en que vivimos se deshace, tenemos de Dios un edificio, una casa eterna en el cielo, no construida por manos humanas».
La vida terrenal nos brinda muchas opciones, pero la eternidad solo nos da dos: el cielo o el infierno. Tu relación con Dios en la tierra determinará el tipo de relación que tendrás con él en la eternidad. Si aprendes a amar y a co”fiar en Jesucristo, el Hijo de Dios, tendrás la invitación para estar toda la eternidad con él. Por otro lado, si rechazas su amor, perdón y salvación, pasarás la eternidad apartado de Dios para siempre.
Esta vida es el preámbulo de la venidera.
C.S. Lewis dijo: «Hay dos tipos de personas: los que le dicen a Dios: “Sea hecha tu voluntad”, y aquellos a quienes Dios les dice: “Muy bien, entonces, hágase tu voluntad”». Tristemente, muchas personas tendrán que pasar la eternidad sin Dios porque eligieron vivir sin él en la tierra.
Una vez que comprendes que la vida es más que vivir aquí y ahora, que es una preparación para la eternidad, entonces comienzas a vivir de una manera diferente. Cuando vives a la luz de la eternidad, tus valores cambian, y eso te da la pauta de cómo manejar toda relación, tarea y circunstancia. De repente muchas de las actividades, metas e incluso problemas que parecían muy importantes se tornarán triviales, pequeños e insignificantes, como para que les prestes atención. Cuanto más te acercas a Dios, más pequeñas se ven las cosas.
Tus valores cambian cuando vives a la luz de la eternidad. Haces uso de tu dinero y tu tiempo de una forma más sabia. Le das un valor mucho más alto a las relaciones y el carácter, que a la fama, la fortuna o los logros. Reordenas tus prioridades. Estar al día con la moda, los estilos y el que dirán ya no tiene importancia. Pablo dijo: «Todo aquello que para mí era ganancia, ahora lo considero pérdida por causa de Cristo».
Si toda tu vida consistiese solo del tiempo que estarás sobre la tierra, te sugeriría que comenzaras a vivirla de inmediato. Podrías olvidarte de ser bueno y hacer lo correcto, y quizás no tendrías que preocuparte por las consecuencias de tus actos. Podrías darte el gusto de dedicarte completamente a ti mismo, porque a la larga tus actos no tendrían repercusión alguna. Ahora bien, y este es el meollo del asunto, ¡la muerte no es tu fin! La muerte no es tu conclusión, más bien es tu transición a la eternidad, de manera que hay consecuencias eternas para todo lo que hagas en la tierra. Todo acto en nuestras vidas toca alguna cuerda que vibrará en la eternidad.
Reflexión:
Conocer tu propósito le da sentido a tu vida, la simplifica, la enfoca y la estimula. Y todo esto también te prepara para la eternidad.
Day 04 • Made to Last Forever

THIS LIFE IS NOT ALL THERE IS.
Life on earth is just the dress rehearsal before the real production. You will spend far more time on the other side of death — in eternity — than you will here. Earth is the staging area, the preschool, the tryout for your life in eternity. It is the practice workout before the actual game; the warm-up lap before the race begins. This life is preparation for the next.
At most, you will live a hundred years on earth, but you will spend forever in eternity. Your time on earth is, as Sir Thomas Browne said, “but a small parenthesis in eternity.” You were made to last forever.
The Bible says, “God has . . . planted eternity in the human heart.” You have an inborn instinct that longs for immortality. This is because God designed you, in his image, to live for eternity. Even though we know everyone eventually dies, death always seems unnatural and unfair. The reason we feel we should live forever is that God wired our brains with that desire!
One day your heart will stop beating. That will be the end of your body and your time on earth, but it will not be the end of you. Your earthly body is just a temporary residence for your spirit. The Bible calls your earthly body a “tent,” but refers to your future body as a “house.” The Bible says, “When this tent we live in — our body here on earth — is torn down, God will have a house in heaven for us to live in, a home he himself has made, which will last forever.”
While life on earth offers many choices, eternity offers only two: heaven or hell. Your relationship to God on earth will determine your relationship to him in eternity. If you learn to love and trust God’s Son, Jesus, you will be invited to spend the rest of eternity with him. On the other hand, if you reject his love, forgiveness, and salvation, you will spend eternity apart from God forever.
C. S. Lewis said, “There are two kinds of people: those who say to God ‘Thy will be done’ and those to whom God says, ‘All right then, have it your way.’ ” Tragically, many people will have to endure eternity without God because they chose to live without him here on earth. This life is preparation for the next.
When you fully comprehend that there is more to life than just here and now, and you realize that life is just preparation for eternity, you will begin to live differently. You will start living in light of eternity, and that will color how you handle every relationship, task, and circumstance. Suddenly many activities, goals, and even problems that seemed so important will appear trivial, petty, and unworthy of your attention. The closer you live to God, the smaller everything else appears.
When you live in light of eternity, your values change. You use your time and money more wisely. You place a higher premium on relationships and character instead of fame or wealth or achievements or even fun. Your priorities are reordered. Keeping up with trends, fashions, and popular values just doesn’t matter as much anymore. Paul said, “I once thought all these things were so very important, but now I consider them worthless because of what Christ has done.”
If your time on earth were all there is to your life, I would suggest you start living it up immediately. You could forget being good and ethical, and you wouldn’t have to worry about any consequences of your actions. You could indulge yourself in total self-centeredness because your actions would have no long-term repercussions. But — and this makes all the difference — death is not the end of you! Death is not your termination, but your transition into eternity, so there are eternal consequences to everything you do on earth. Every act of our lives strikes some chord that will vibrate in eternity.

Knowing your purpose gives your life meaning, simplicity, focus, and motivation. It also prepares you for eternity.
