Colosenses 3:2
Poned la mira en las cosas de arriba, no en las de la tierra.
Muchos vivimos buscando lo económico o una mejor salud, mejores relaciones y amistades, o buscando oportunidades para superarse en la vida. Aun cuando esto no está mal (ya que hemos sido llamados a trabajar), estas cosas no son el lugar para poner nuestro enfoque principal.
¿Qué pasa con aquellos que no les fue bien económicamente, su salud no está muy bien, o sus relaciones no progresaron en el año anterior? ¿Les fue mal a ellos? Creo que hay un factor muy importante y que muchas veces pasamos por alto. ¿Qué de lo espiritual? Nosotros hemos sido llamados a evaluar y vivir cada año con base en nuestro crecimiento espiritual, nuestro deseo por Dios, y nuestra obediencia a Dios.
Muchas veces estas virtudes llegan cuando nuestros ingresos no incrementan, nuestra salud es afectada, y nuestras relaciones se estancan. Dios usa lo que el mundo considera como perdido para redimirlo y hacernos más dependientes de Él.
Por eso el apóstol Pablo le exhorta a los creyentes en Colosas —y a nosotros— a buscar las cosas de arriba. En Colosenses 3, Pablo nos llama a buscar y a poner nuestra mirada en Cristo, para así matar nuestros deseos pecaminosos.
Un llamado diferente
Como cristianos, hemos sido llamados a pensar de una manera diferente, a ver la cosas desde la perspectiva de Cristo y no la nuestra o la del mundo. ¿Cómo cumplir este llamado? Pablo nos dice:
“Si ustedes, pues, han resucitado con Cristo, busquen las cosas de arriba, donde está Cristo sentado a la diestra de Dios” Colosenses 3:1.
Observa la palabra “si”. Esta palabrita nos muestra que lo que sigue tiene una condición. En otras palabras, Pablo dice que no podemos hacer lo que Dios quiere sin antes ser.
¿Qué es lo que tiene que suceder en nuestra vida para buscar las cosas de arriba? Tenemos que haber resucitado. Tenemos que primero ver nuestra muerte espiritual. Sin Cristo, tú y yo estábamos muertos espiritualmente; dicho de otro modo, buscábamos nuestra gloria y la del mundo, sin buscar la gloria verdadera en Dios. Pero ahora, como seguidores de nuestro Señor y Salvador Jesús, celebramos día a día la verdadera libertad, aquella que nos salvó de una muerte espiritual y eterna.
Una mirada enfocada
Vivimos una libertad verdadera, la cual nos ha sido dada por la vida y muerte de Cristo. ¡No usemos esta preciosa libertad para acomodarnos a lo terrenal! Como dice el próximo verso (3:2),
“Pongan la mira en las cosas de arriba, no en las de la tierra”.
Pongamos nuestra seguridad, identidad, gozo, amor, paz, y descanso en Dios y no en lo que Él nos da. Permíteme preguntarte: ¿Por qué trabajas? ¿Por qué estudias? La respuesta a estas preguntas te ayudarán a ver si la razón por la que haces estas cosas se han mezclado con una ambición pecaminosa, una ambición a tener más de esta tierra y no más de Cristo.
Es verdad: hemos sido llamados a glorificar a Dios en nuestro trabajo, estudio, ejercicio, hobbies, y descanso. Pero no podemos hacer de estas actividades un fin; más bien son un medio. Un medio para buscar más y más la gloria de Aquel que está sentado, gobernando el mundo a nuestro favor: Cristo.
¿Cómo buscar las cosas de arriba en estos tiempos? Trabaja con excelencia, no en tus propias fuerzas, ni para que seas visto por otros, sino para mostrar a Cristo. Estudia usando la mente que Dios te ha dado para aprender más de la biblia además estudia e investiga en la profesión u oficio a la que tienes inclinación, pero no para que vean cuán inteligente eres, sino para que vean cuán sabio es tu Salvador. Cuidemos el cuerpo que Él nos ha dado haciendo ejercicio y comiendo bien, pero no para encontrar allí nuestra identidad, sino para ser buenos mayordomos del templo del Espíritu Santo, que es nuestro cuerpo.
Un descanso completo
Recuerda que nuestra mirada y esperanza debe estar en Dios, y en lo que Él hará cuando Cristo venga. Debemos anhelar su nueva creación, en donde disfrutaremos de su presencia por el resto de la eternidad, en los nuevos cielos y nueva tierra. ¿Tienes dudas, miedos, e inseguridades? Tu mayor problema ya fue resuelto. Fuiste reconciliado con Dios en Cristo, ¡tu pecado en contra del Dios Santo ya fue perdonado por Cristo!
Descansa en el amor de Dios, confía en su gracia y poder en ti por medio del Espíritu, y glorifícale. ¡Vive en su libertad! Esta libertad no solo se disfruta en esta tierra, sino que se disfrutará por la eternidad. De nuevo, si has resucitado con Cristo, tu mayor deseo terrenal debe ser ese: ser más como Cristo.
Oración:
Bendito Dios, necesitamos morir a todo lo terrenal que no permite el enfoque en las cosas celestiales, y a todo lo que nos arrastra a la muerte espiritual sea removido por tu poder.
Trae lo nuevo que tienes para nosotros; hoy decidimos enfocarnos en lo eterno que tú nos das, en el nombre de Jesús, ¡Amén!
Seeking heavenly things
Colossians 3:2
Set your sights on the things above, not on those of the earth.
Many of us live looking for the economic or better health, better relationships and friendships, or looking for opportunities to improve ourselves in life. Even though this is not bad (since we have been called to work), these things are not the place to put our main focus.
What about those who didn’t do well financially, their health isn’t very good, or their relationships didn’t progress in the previous year? I think there is a very important factor that we often overlook. What about the spiritual? We have been called to evaluate and live each year based on our spiritual growth, our desire for God, and our obedience to God. Many times these virtues come when our income does not increase, our health is affected, and our relationships stagnate. God uses what the world sees as lost to redeem it and make us more dependent on Him. That is why the apostle Paul exhorts the believers in Colossae—and us—to seek the things above. In Colossians 3, Paul calls us to seek and set our gaze on Christ, in order to kill our sinful desires.
As Christians, we have been called to think differently, to see things from Christ’s perspective and not our own or the world’s.
Paul tells us, “If you, therefore, have risen with Christ, seek the things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God” Colossians 3:1.
Notice the word “if.” This little word shows us that what follows has a condition. In other words, Paul says we can’t do what God wants without first being.
What has to happen in our life to seek the things above? We must have risen. We have to first see our spiritual death. Without Christ, you and I were spiritually dead; in other words, we sought our glory and that of the world, without seeking true glory in God. But now, as followers of our Lord and Savior Jesus, we celebrate day by day true freedom, that which saved us from a spiritual and eternal death.
We live a true freedom, which has been given to us by the life and death of Christ. Let us not use this precious freedom to accommodate ourselves to the earthly! As the next verse (3:2) says,
“Set your sights on the things above, not on those of the earth.”
Let us put our security, identity, joy, love, peace, and rest in God and not in what He gives us. Let me ask you: Why do you work? Why do you study? The answer to these questions will help you see if the reason you do these things has been mixed with a sinful ambition, an ambition to have more of this earth and not more of Christ.
It is true: we have been called to glorify God in our work, study, exercise, hobbies, and rest. But we cannot make these activities an end; rather they are a means. A means to seek more and more the glory of the One who is seated, ruling the world on our behalf: Christ.
How to look for the things above in these times? Work with excellence, not in your own strength, nor so that you may be seen by others, but to show Christ. Study using the mind God has given you to learn more about the Bible and study and research in the profession or trade to which you are inclined, but not to see how intelligent you are, but to see how wise your Savior is. Let us take care of the body He has given us by exercising and eating well, but not to find our identity there, but to be good stewards of the temple of the Holy Spirit, which is our body.
A complete rest
Remember that our gaze and hope must be on God, and on what He will do when Christ comes. We must long for his new creation, where we will enjoy his presence for the rest of eternity, in the new heavens and new earth. Do you have doubts, fears, and insecurities? Your biggest problem has already been solved. You were reconciled to God in Christ, your sin against the Holy God was already forgiven by Christ!
Rest in God’s love, trust in His grace and power in you through the Spirit, and glorify Him. Live in His freedom! This freedom is not only enjoyed on this earth, but will be enjoyed for eternity. Again, if you have risen with Christ, your greatest earthly desire must be that: to be more like Christ.
Prayer:
Blessed God, we need to die to everything earthly that does not allow focus on heavenly things, and everything that drags us to spiritual death be removed by your power. Bring the new you have for us; today we decide to focus on the eternal that you give us, on the name of Jesus, Amen!
