Donde hay envidias y rivalidades, hay también desorden y toda clase de maldad;

Santiago 3:16 también dice que la envidia es fuente de «toda clase de mal». ¿Puede la envidia hacer que una persona mienta? Sí. ¿Hacer que una persona robe? Sí. ¿Que asesine? Por supuesto. Los asesinatos motivados por la envidia aparecen en los noticiarios a diario, y la Biblia está repleta de ejemplos de crímenes motivados por este mal: Caín mató a su hermano Abel por envidia. Los hermanos de José lo vendieron como esclavo debido a la envidia. Saúl trató varias veces de matar a David porque envidiaba su popularidad. La Biblia indica con claridad que los dirigentes religiosos hicieron que mataran a Jesús debido a que lo envidiaban profundamente.
La envidia te infecta todo por dentro y afecta todo lo que te rodea. Así que, ¿cómo erradicamos la envidia de nuestra vida? La Biblia nos da una manera.
Pasos para erradicar la envidia
¡Deja de compararte con otros! Este es el punto de partida. La comparación es la raíz de toda envidia. Por desdicha, casi desde el momento en que comenzamos a andar, también empezamos a comparar. ¿Puedes recordar las ocasiones en que te quejaste de que a tu hermano o hermana le dieron más helado que a ti? Crecemos comparándolo todo: la apariencia, las calificaciones en la escuela, la capacidad atlética y otros talentos. Como adultos comparamos la ropa, los coches (o la falta del mismo), las casas, cuánto ganamos y mil cosas más. Sin embargo, Dios nos dice que tales comparaciones son necias. La Biblia declara: «Al medirse con su propia medida y compararse unos con otros, no saben lo que hacen».
¿Por qué resulta necio compararte a ti mismo con otros? ¡Porque eres incomparable! Lo mismo que todos los demás. Dios nos hizo a cada uno de nosotros «único en su clase». Además, la comparación lleva a una de dos reacciones negativas: orgullo o envidia. Siempre podrás hallar a alguien con relación al cuál te considerarás mejor, así que te mostrarás orgulloso. Por otro lado, siempre hallarás otros a los que les va mejor que a ti, de modo que sentirás envidia y te desalentarás. Lo que importa no es a quién le va mejor, sino si estás cumpliendo el propósito para el cual Dios te creó. ¿Estás haciendo lo mejor posible con lo que te ha sido dado?
Dios no te juzga por los talentos que no tienes ni las oportunidades que no se te presentan. Él evaluará tu fidelidad por la forma en que viviste y lo que hiciste con lo que te fue dado.
Recuerda esto: ¡Dios no te ha llamado a que seas el mejor del mundo en alguna cosa! Él te ha llamado a que seas lo mejor que puedes ser dado tu trasfondo, experiencias, oportunidades y capacidades. Así que decide ahora mismo que vas a romper el hábito de compararte con otros. Llevará tiempo, pero puedes entrenarte a fin de reenfocarte en otra cosa siempre que te veas tentado a compararte. Simplemente repítete a ti mismo: «No voy a seguir por ese camino», y empieza a pensar en otra cosa.
Reflexión:
La envidia desperdicia tu tiempo y tu energía. Es la enemiga del contentamiento.
DAY 41/Fourth part • The Envy Trap
For where envy and self-seeking exist, confusion and every evil thing are there.
James 3:16 NKJV
James 3:16 also says that envy is a source of “every evil practice.” Can envy cause a person to lie? Yes. Cause a person to steal? Yes. Murder? Of course. Murders motivated by envy make the daily news, and the Bible is filled with examples of envy-based crimes: Cain killed his brother Abel out of envy. Joseph’s brothers sold him into slavery out of envy. Saul tried to kill David several times out of envying his popularity. The Bible clearly states that the religious leaders had Jesus put to death because they deeply envied him!
Envy infects everything inside you and affects everything around you. So how do you eradicate envy from your life? The Bible gives us a pathway.
Steps to Eradicating Envy
Stop comparing yourself to others! This is the starting point. Comparing is the root of all envy. Unfortunately, from about the time we each began to walk, we also began to compare. Can you remember all those times you complained that your brother or sister got more ice cream than you? We grow up comparing everything: appearance, grades in school, athletic ability, and other talents. As adults we compare clothes, cars (or the lack of one), homes, how much we earn, and a thousand other things. But God says such comparisons are foolish. The Bible says, “When they measure themselves by themselves and compare themselves to themselves, they show how foolish they are.”
Why is it foolish to compare yourself with others? Because you are incomparable! So is everyone else. God made each of us “one of a kind.” Besides, comparing leads to one of two negative reactions: pride or envy. You can always find someone you think you’re better than, and you will be prideful. On the other hand, you will always find people that you think are doing better than you, and you will become envious and discouraged. What matters is not who’s better off, but are you doing what God created you to do? Are you making the most of what you’ve been given?
God doesn’t judge you for talents you don’t have or for opportunities you didn’t get. He evaluates your faithfulness by how you lived and what you did with what you were given.
Remember this: God has not called you to be the best in the world at anything! He has called you to be the best you can be, given your background, experiences, opportunities, and abilities. So . . . decide right now that you are going to break the habit of comparing yourself to others. It will take some time, but you can train yourself to refocus on something else whenever you are tempted to compare. Just tell yourself, “I’m not going to go down that path,” and start thinking of something else.
Reflection:
Envy misuses your time and energy. It is the enemy of contentment.
