La envidia divide tu atención. No puedes concentrarte por completo en llegar a ser lo que Dios quiere que seas y envidiar a otros al mismo tiempo. Jesús dijo: «Nadie que mire atrás después de poner la mano en el arado es apto para el reino de Dios».4 Si siempre estás preocupado observando lo que otros hacen, o deseando lo que otros tienen, no lograrás ver lo que Dios está haciendo en tu vida.
La envidia desperdicia tu tiempo y tu energía. ¡Salomón notó que es por envidia que la mayoría de las personas trabajan demasiado! «Vi además que tanto el afán como el éxito en la vida despiertan envidias. Y también esto es absurdo; ¡es correr tras el viento!». Él pone el ejemplo de un hombre que como resultado «nunca dejaba de afanarse; ¡jamás le parecían demasiadas sus riquezas! “¿Para quién trabajo tanto, y me abstengo de las cosas buenas?”, se preguntó. ¡También esto es absurdo, y una penosa tarea!».
La envidia es enemiga del contentamiento. La envidia dice: «Siempre tengo que tener más: más dinero, más posesiones, más poder, prestigio, placer y popularidad». Muchos se matan tratando de igualar o superar a quienes envidian. La Biblia dice que eso es necio: «No te afanes acumulando riquezas; no te obsesiones con ellas».
La envidia te conduce a otros pecados. La envidia es uno de los llamados «siete pecados capitales». Estos son los pecados básicos de los cuales brotan muchos otros. La Biblia dice: «Pues donde hay envidias y rivalidades, allí hay confusión y toda clase de mal». Nota que la envidia causa «confusión». Siempre que la envidia saca su cabeza, produce desarmonía, competencia, conflicto y confusión. En cualquier momento en que parezca que una relación personal «no funciona», debes verificar si la envidia o la ambición egoísta es la causa posible.

La envidia te infecta todo por dentro y afecta todo lo que te rodea.
DAY 41/Third part • The Envy Trap
A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy rots the bones.
PROVERBS 14:30 (NIV)
Envy divides your attention. You can’t give your full concentration to becoming what God wants you to be and envy others at the same time. Jesus said, “Anyone who lets himself be distracted from the work I plan for him is not fit for the Kingdom of God.” 4 If you are always preoccupied watching what others do, or wishing you had what they have, you will miss seeing what God is doing in you.
Envy misuses your time and energy. Solomon noted that envy is the reason why most people overwork! “I have also learned why people work so hard to succeed: it is because they envy the things their neighbors have. But it is useless. It is like chasing the wind.” The result is, “. . . he is always working, never satisfied with the wealth he has. For whom is he working so hard and denying himself any pleasure? This is useless, too — and a miserable way to live.”
Envy is the enemy of contentment. Envy says, “I’ve always got to have more: more money, more possessions, more power, more prestige, pleasure, and popularity.” Many people work themselves to death trying to match or surpass those they envy. The Bible says that is foolish: “Don’t wear yourself out trying to get rich; be wise enough to control yourself.”
Envy leads you to other sins. Envy is one of the so-called “Seven Deadly Sins.” These are root sins that many other sins grow out of. The Bible says, “Where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice.” Note that envy causes “disorder.” Whenever envy raises its head, it creates disharmony, competition, conflict, and confusion. Anytime a relationship seems “out of order,” you should check for either envy or selfish ambition as a possible cause.
